There are 4 commonly known “C’s” of buying a diamond:

  • Cut
  • Color
  • Clarity
  • Carat Weight

Diamond Cut

A diamond’s cut refers to its reflective qualities. A diamond’s cut is commonly confused with shape: round, pear, etc… Diamond cut is often considered the most important factor of diamond quality. An ideal cut can give a diamond brilliance, which is the brightness that seems to come from the center of the diamond.

Diamond Color

Many diamonds can initially appear colorless, but upon closer inspection, many diamonds have subtle brown or yellow tones. Colorless diamonds are the most rare and most valuable of all diamonds. There are color grading scales set by the Gemological Institute of America. Come by our shop to learn more!

Diamond Clarity

Most diamonds aren’t perfect and contain inclusions & blemishes. The clarity of a diamond rates the absense of the flaws and how clear or clean a diamond is internally. Of course, the amount of blemishes or inclusions on a diamond will affect the price, a cleaner diamond will be more expensive.

Diamond Carat Weight

Carat Weight is the proper measure of a diamond, rather than standard volume dimensions. There are a variety of factors that determine Carat Weight, but put simply it is a metric built to evaluate the perceived size of a diamond when viewing the diamond set in a ring.
